If you connect them without the software the output of the headphones will connect but the microphone will connect as the Microsoft Sount Mapper Input. It's not made clear that before you insert the dongle you need to download the software for the headphones from the Arctis website as you need that software to properly connect the headphones.
The instructions leave much to be desired. There is a also a wire included for connecting directly to the computer and forgoing the wireless feature. In the box is a 3 foot cable that converts the USB-C to USB-A if you need to go that route.
My computer has one USB-C port on the front but, as can be seen from the photo, the dongle partially covers the USB-A that is next to that port so the USB-A is not usable when using the headphones. The replacement headphone works but still has a few issues. The USB-C charging port on the first one I received was loose so the headphones could not be charged.
